Stromatolite is one of the oldest types of rock you can hold in your hands—some pieces date back over 3 billion years. It’s made up of thin, wavy layers of sediment built up by ancient cyanobacteria, some of the earliest life forms on Earth.

These bacteria lived in shallow water and trapped sediment over time, slowly forming the layered structure we now see as Stromatolite. The result is a stone with beautiful banding in shades of brown, tan, grey, and sometimes even green or black, depending on where it’s from.
